It is known to form a heterodimer with SMC1, which subsequently can restructure the double helical form of DNA into a series of loops. Studies have reported that the opening of the Smc3-Scc1 gate is needed for removal of cohesion from chromosomes during prophase. However, in Drosophila, the disengagement of Smc3/kleisin interface releases cohesin from chromosomes during mitosis and interphase.
