General description
Carbohydrate-binding protein that agglutinates various animal cells. Also known to restore the growth pattern of tumor cells to that of normal cells. T lymphocyte activator. Has binding sites for metal ions, α-D-mannose, and α-D-glucose. Has a pI of 4.5-5.5.

Preparation Note
To dissolve, add Con A slowly to a solution of 10 mM HEPES buffered saline, 100 µM CaCl₂, pH 8.5. Allow the lectin to dissolve without agitation.
Reconstitution
Following reconstitution, aliquot and freeze (-20°C) or add 0.08% NaN₃ and refrigerate (4°C). Stock solutions are stable for up to 6 months at -20°C or for up to 3 months at 4°C.
Analysis Note
The agglutination activity is the lowest conc. to agglutinate a 2% suspension of human erythrocytes after 1 hr incubation at 25°C; requires type A human blood.
