Target description
Protein kinase C delta type (UniProt: Q05655; also known as EC:2.7.11.13, Tyrosine-protein kinase PRKCD (EC:2.7.10.2), EC:2.7.10.2, nPKC-delta, Protein kinase C delta type regulatory subunit, Protein kinase C delta type catalytic subunit, Sphingosine-dependent protein kinase-1 (SDK1)) is encoded by the PRKCD (also known as PKCD) gene (Gene ID: 5580) in human. Protein kinase C delta type (PKC ) is a serine/threonine kinase, a member of the novel protein kinase C (PKC) subfamily. PKC comprises several domains including a regulatory domain with C1 and C2 motifs that mediate its interaction with diacylglycerol and phospholipids, and a catalytic domain responsible for its kinase activity. PKC is involved in regulating diverse cellular processes such as apoptosis, cell proliferation, differentiation, growth regulation, tissue remodeling and immune responses. It acts as a signal transducer in pathways triggered by various stimuli, including growth factors and stress signals, by phosphorylating a wide range of substrates. PKC is ubiquitously expressed, with particularly high levels in tissues such as the brain, heart, and immune cells, reflecting its broad functional roles. PKC has been implicated in cancer, where it can act as either a tumor suppressor or promoter depending on the cellular context. It is also associated with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders, and Parkinson where its dysregulation can contribute to disease pathogenesis. (Ref.: Miao.
