General description

Sodium metabisulfite (MBS, Sodium disulfite) is an inorganic salt. It is the sodium salt of disulphurous (pyrosulfurous) acid. It is widely used as reducing agent in textile and photography industry. It is commonly added to various foods and wines as preservative.

Application

Sodium metabisulfite was used to initiate the cross-linking of polybutadiene in the cores of the vesicle membranes by free radical polymerization in solution. It has been used to prevent the oxidation (as antioxidant) during the preparation of stock solutions of 6-hydroxydopamine in various studies.
