General description

Honokiol exhibits analgesic, antithrombotic, antispasmodic, antidepressant, antimicrobial and neuroprotective effects.[1] It regulates gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) A receptors.[2] Honokiol is associated with an increased risk of bleeding.[3] It prevents platelet aggregation, protects myocardium from ischemic damage and inhibits ventricular arrhythmia.[4]

Application

Honokiol has been used:
  • to study its effects on plasmid hSirt3102-399 deacetylation activity[5]
  • as an antioxidant to study its cytoprotective role in human ovarian cancer cells (SKOV-3) and Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHOK1)[6]
  • to explore its effects on oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction via a sirt3-dependent manner[7]
  • for intracerebroventricular (ICV) cannulation[8][9]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Honokiol is a natural biphenyl neolignan from magnolia extract. It is antiangiogenic, antitumor, and anxiolytic.

Apoptosis, or programmed cell death (PCD), is a selective process for the removal of unnecessary, infected or transformed cells in various biological systems. As it plays a role in the homeostasis of multicellular organisms, apoptosis is tightly regulated through two principal pathways by a number of regulatory and effector molecules.

n proliferating cells, the cell cycle consists of four phases. Gap 1 (G1) is the interval between mitosis and DNA replication that is characterized by cell growth. Replication of DNA occurs during the synthesis (S) phase, which is followed by a second gap phase (G2) during which growth and preparation for cell division occurs. Together, these three stages comprise the interphase phase of the cell cycle. Interphase is followed by the mitotic (M) phase.
