Description

General description

Iron (III) oxide (Fe₂O₃) is an inorganic compound. It is one of the three main types of iron oxide. The other two are the rare iron (II) oxide (FeO) and the naturally occurring iron (II, III) oxide (Fe₃O₄), found in the mineral magnetite. In the steel industry Fe₂O₃ is the primary source of iron. In addition to being ferromagnetic, Fe₂O₃ is easily attacked by acids.

Application

Iron (III) oxide is used:

• As a catalyst in the reduction of nitroarenes.
• As an oxidizing agent in the synthesis of [11C] Phosgene ([11C] COCl₂).
