General description

Zinc Fluoride tetrahydrate is a white crystalline solid with slight solubility in water. It serves as a source of Zinc for oxygen-sensitive applications and is utilized as a mild fluorinating agent in halogenated hydrocarbons. Additionally, it is employed in the synthesis of fluoride glass optical fibers and optical transmitting glass.

Application

Zinc Fluoride tetrahydrate plays a key role in creating Zinc-based Triazolate Frameworks, Zinc metal Batteries, as well as in the production of glass optical fibers and optical transmitting glass. To illustrate, the synthesis of Zinc-based metal-triazolate frameworks involves mixing HdaTZ and HF in water, filtering the mixture into a microwave tube, adding ZnF2.4H2O, stirring for approximately an hour, heating the mixture in a microwave at 160°C for 1 minute, repeating this process for 30 minutes, and then allowing it to cool to room temperature, resulting in a reddish-white ZnF(daTZ). This substance is utilized to capture CO2 from flue gas. Similarly, to improve the cycling stability and address corrosion issues in aqueous Zn-based batteries, Zinc fluoride is used as a coatings applied to the surface of zinc metal anodes to make dendrite free anode. Researchers employed this simple and rapid anodic growth strategy to produce a 3D interconnected ZnF2 matrix on the surface of Zn metal to enhance wettability for aqueous electrolytes, elevated corrosion resistance, reduced hydrogen evolution reaction, and improved Zn2+ desolvation capability.
