Trimethyl citrate is one of the constituents of Dioscorea opposita. The IC₅₀ value for monoamine oxidase-B of trimethyl citrate was studied.

Trimethyl citrate, can be utilized as a plasticizer in PVC (polyvinylchloride) and the enteric coating of hard gelatin capsules.
