General description

Sodium nitrate is synthesized by treating nitrite with nitric acid. The proportion of nitrite production is higher when synthesized by absorbing waste gases from nitric acid. Supplementation of sodium nitrate may serve to improve acute heart failure (AHF) by modulating the nitric oxide precursor levels.

Application

Sodium nitrate has been used:
  • in combination with beef extract for virus elution from water samples
  • as an external calibrant in nitrate assay to quantify nitrate in cell culture medium
  • as a component of liquid BG11-medium for culturing Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942
  • to test its protective effects in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury
