General description

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a peptide hormone is liberated from endocrine epithelial cells of the small intestine.[1] The proglucagon gene (GCG) codes for glucagon, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2).[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) treatment helps to lower the risk of stroke in diabetic patients and to be neuroprotective in experimental stroke models.[1] It participates in glucose homeostasis and has an impact on the cardiovascular system.[3] GLP-1 may promote pancreatic β-cell proliferation and neogenesis. It enhances insulin release after a meal and triggers insulin transcription and biosynthesis.[2]
